Home Gym Headaches!
Purchasing a gym can be truly a mind boggling experience. Especially these days with so many training styles and equipment available. I look at our website compared to the past and their are just so many quality options available. So it is no wonder we have people in our showroom or on the phone and their heads are just spinning!
So if you are in this predicament, the Barbarian Smith Cable Rack will always be a safe bet. The first box you should always tick is quality and durability. Anything with a Barbarian badge on it will pass with flying colours.
All in one and one for all
What makes it a sure thing is that it gives a quality half rack, smith machine and functional trainer all in one compact unit - at a very affordable price. This gives you so much variety in such a small space, you will be hard pressed to find a similar piece of equipment that offers so much. Barbell, smith and cable training are tried and tested so you can rest assured that the training will be effective. Let's not forget two chin up bars, 30 mm thick multi-grip in the front and straight bar in the back of the rack.
Stands out from the crowd
There are many many variants of these smith/half rack/crossover gyms doing the rounds. I have seen some pretty ordinary ones at trade shows and the Barbarian ones are night and day in terms of quality. The finish and durability of the Barbarian machines have been continually refined over the years. Check out the injection molded bearing housings for the smith machine bearings.
The Barbarian Smith Cable Rack was designed as alternative to the Barbarian Monster Gym. The Barbarian Monster Gym packed a lot functionality into a compact footprint, but to do this some compromises had to be made. Naturally the Monster smith machine is compact, and at 184cm I have no real issues, the Smith Cable Rack is a full sized smith. It has a less cramped feel.
Due to the cable configuration on the Monster, the weight stacks have a 2:1 ratio, this requires 100kg weight stacks - which adds greatly to the price tag. By moving to a plate loaded option, the Smith Cable Rack has a 1:1 ratio. So not only is it cheaper, you require less weight plates too.
Tough yet Smooth
The cable crossover pulleys and weight carriage utilise a silky smooth bushing system. You can see the bushes are pressed into the housing - this reduces the amount of play and stops them from ever popping out. The precise fit ensures they run smooth and quietly for many years of solid use. They pulleys can be adjusted via the commercial style pull pins.
You can also see that thick walled steel is used throughout. While this can be used on cheaper versions, and it does help, there is nothing that can replace quality design and manufacture. This Smith Cable Rack has been designed in house, in Germany - by the same team that has developed the Megatec and ATX ranges. It is these often subtle design elements that make these gyms into absolute tanks, even under the heaviest of loads.
The pictures don't do this machine justice. If you are in Sydney it is well worth checking out. If not, and you have tried a similar style gym that was flimsy, let us know the make and model and we can talk you through the design elements that make the Smith Cable Rack so robust.
Don't want to purchase the lat option? No Problem
When doing lat pulldowns just adjust the spotter arm to the correct height where your legs will be anchored into position when lifting heavy.
In the video below, we are using the BB-9052 Barbarian Commercial Weight Lifting FID Bench. It butts up perfectly to the base. Any of the Barbarian or Megatec benches will work too. Doing seated rows is even easier. You just utilise the resistance band peg holes in the base. Insert the band peg and leave enough space either side for your feet. Naturally make sure you are wearing shoes with decent cushioning in the sole. Here is an article on how to perform lat pulldowns and seated rows on the Barbarian Smith Cable Rack.
You need to purchase a couple of extras to get yourself going. To do Lat Pulldowns and Cable Rows all you need is:
- 1 x Barbarian Resistance Band Peg (BB-90-CLIP)
- 2 x Upholstery Foam Rollers (Z-PR-120) or (Z-PR-110)
- Barbarian Seated Row Seat (BB-9081-S) this is optional. It just makes doing seated rows a whole lot more comfortable than sitting on a cold concrete floor in winter! Alternatively you can sit on a bench in the decline position to do cable rows and the bench itself when doing Lat Pulldowns.
Don't know which SCR is best for you?
Choosing the right home gym can be a daunting task. It all comes down to your idea of a home gym vs what you actually need and how much you are willing to spend. To make it easier for you, we came up with a guide. Which explains the benefits and downsides of each variant. More Information.
Note: The shipping price quoted is for delivery to address where there is a forklift. If we ship to a home address there will be an extra charge to cover hand unloading and/or a tailgate. This will be approximately $80. Alternatively if you are in a major city you can pick up from a depot, which saves you waiting around for the delivery. Just call or email and we will work something out. The Barbarian Smith Cable Gym comes with Olympic sleeves for Olympic weight plates. They slide over 30mm steel horns. If you intend on using standard weight plates, the internal hole needs to be 31+mm.
