Squats with either a barbell or on a smith machine are hard work from every angle. Hence the reason why a lot of people avoid this exercise altogether.
When you work up to heavy weights the barbell across the shoulders can be quite painful. The old rolled up towel or barbell pad will work to a degree but there is not much science in either option.
The reason why the Manta Ray is better is because it spreads the surface area of the load. The contoured design also makes the barbell sit more securely on your shoulders. This is probably the biggest benefit I find. Your shoulders don’t have to hyper extend just to keep the barbell in place.

The material is too hard, the original Mantas are pliable so they can accommodate different barbell diameters.
The way to see if a Manta Ray is genuine is by the stamp. At the moment the copies don't have them. Naturally after being burnt by a fake, a customer wanted some evidence so we were only to happy to provide it.
