The barbell is probably the most recognisable piece of strength equipment by the general public, especially given their use in Olympic weight lifting. They’re found in all commercial gyms as they’re used for a wide variety of exercises. This is the reason why I believe they are so important and why I could train with just a barbell, forever!

Different Types of Barbells
The Straight Bar (Olympic vs Standard)
The most common barbell is the straight bar — the one used in Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. Olympic barbells are 7ft long with extra-long sleeves designed to load Olympic weight plates, which have 50mm diameter holes. Standard barbells are shorter with 30mm holes and designed for standard plates.
Unless you already own a lot of standard plates, go Olympic. The range of compatible equipment, weights, and accessories is vastly larger, and the quality ceiling is much higher. The Australian market has well and truly moved this way too — standard plates were common years ago, but they’re becoming harder to find. Straight bars range from 7ft down to 4ft.
EZ Bar (Curl Bar)
The EZ bar is a short, angled bar with W-shaped bends along the grip section. Those bends exist to take pressure off your wrists during bicep curls and tricep extensions — hence the name. For anyone who gets wrist or elbow discomfort doing straight-bar curls, the EZ bar is the fix.
Trap Bar (Hex Bar)
The trap bar is a hexagonal frame you stand inside. It was designed to shift the load from the front of your body to the centre during deadlifts — the bar sleeves sit at the ends of the hex structure, so the weight tracks closer to your centre of gravity. The result: you can lift heavier, with less spinal loading. Trap bar deadlifts are now used by everyone from beginners to elite athletes.
Unless you already have loads of standard weight plates, I would strongly advise getting an Olympic barbell. Although they are a little more expensive, they do weigh more – so you will require less weight plates. This will partially offset the initial cost.
Most importantly, there is far more variety in the range of Olympic barbells, weight plates and gym equipment. Plus, the quality is generally better. Standard plates were very common in Australia years ago, but the industry has well and truly moved to Olympic.

Their spring steel shafts stand up to heavy training. The solid steel sleeves (as opposed to cast ones on cheaper bars) rotate on either copper bushings or bearings. The sleeves need to rotate on dynamic lifts to reduce the strain on your wrists and provide stability. Either sleeve rotation method utilised by the Power Maxx range has been proven to stand up to heavy training for years.
My trusty Power Maxx copper bushed Olympic bar has proven to be a workhorse for me for years so I can give them no better recommendation than this.

What's the difference between an Olympic barbell, EZ bar, and trap bar?
An Olympic barbell is 7 ft long with rotating sleeves — the standard for bench press, squat, deadlift, overhead press. An EZ curl bar is shorter with a wavy grip — used for biceps and triceps to reduce wrist strain. A trap (or hex) bar is a hexagonal frame you stand inside of — safer for deadlifts because the load is centered on your hips. Most home gyms need an Olympic bar first; an EZ bar second; a trap bar is optional but excellent.
How long do barbells last and do they rust?
A quality barbell from a brand like ATX or Power Maxx will last 20+ years with basic care. The two finishes you’ll see are chrome (shinier, more rust-resistant, slightly slicker grip) and black oxide (better grip, but rusts if not maintained). To prevent rust: brush off chalk after every workout with a nylon brush, store indoors away from humidity, and wipe with a light coat of 3-in-1 oil monthly. If you live near the coast, chrome is the safer choice. Avoid leaving any barbell outside.
What weight barbell should I buy — 15kg, 18kg, or 20kg?
20kg is the IPF and Olympic standard for men’s bars and the most universal choice — every plate, weight chart and program assumes a 20kg bar. 15kg women’s bars have a thinner 25mm grip designed for smaller hands and are mandatory for IPF women’s competition. 18kg bars don’t really exist as a standard — if you’ve seen one it was probably a junior or training bar. Unless you’re a competing female powerlifter, get the 20kg.
What is tensile strength and how much do I need?
Tensile strength measures how much force the bar can take before permanent deformation, in PSI. For a home gym, anything 165,000 PSI or higher is fine — your bar will outlast you. Powerlifting bars are 190,000-205,000 PSI. Olympic weightlifting bars are 215,000+ PSI because of the dynamic loading from drops. Sam’s Power Maxx bars are 165,000-190,000 PSI; ATX bars range up to 215,000 PSI for competition use.
Does the barbell come with collars / weight clips?
We sell our Olympic bars without collars. There are many different varieties these days so choose the style that best suits your traing. For serious training we recommend upgrading to lock-jaw style collars (we stock OSO and ATX brands) which won’t slip mid-set under heavy weight. Bumper-plate users with calibrated discs should use IPF-spec collars (2.5kg each) for accurate competition prep. Spring collars are fine for general training.
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard Olympic barbell weighs 20kg (men’s) or 15kg (women’s Olympic spec). EZ bars are typically 10-12kg. Standard and shorter barbells vary — some start as light as 5-7kg. Always check the listed weight before programming your lifts.
